Sparkworld welcomes move over parking regulations

22/06/2006

Devon electrical retailers and wholesalers Sparkworld have welcomed a call by a committee of MPs for a major overhaul of the way parking regulations are enforced in the UK.

The Transport Select Committee report is set to recommend a single national system governing traffic wardens and parking attendants.

Last month Sparkworld wrote to the committee complaining that over-zealous parking wardens were affecting many small businesses.

Sparkworld delivers electrical appliances to 140 independent retailers throughout England and Wales, and in the past 12 months the number of parking tickets given to the company’s delivery drivers has trebled.

“Many of the businesses we deliver to do not have rear delivery areas and we have to stop on yellow lines outside the shops to deliver heavy items,” said Marian Crausaz, managing director of Sparkworld. “A year or two ago traffic wardens would let us do our jobs for the 10 or 15 minutes it takes, but now they just slap tickets on our vehicles.

“I appreciate that there have to be rules and regulations about parking,” said Marian, “but we have to have some give and take where deliveries are concerned. Our drivers want to complete their deliveries as quickly as possible to it is in the interest of everyone to let them do their job without petty interference.

“I welcome the Transport Select Committee’s suggestion for a single national system. It could be a big help to small businesses such as ours.”

MPs are expected to ask for a national system of standards for privatised parking enforcement, with more councils being able to use their discretion when issuing tickets rather than rigidly sticking to the rules.
