Smoking ban hailed a success
20/12/2006
A smoking ban introduced by a Devon business is a year old on January 1, and the ban has been hailed a success by company bosses.
Devon electrical wholesalers and retailers Sparkworld introduced a complete ban on smoking in the workplace on January 1 2006, well ahead of government legislation. The ban applies to all areas of the company’s bases at Heathfield, Newton Abbot, and Martock in Somerset.
The ban was introduced by the joint managing directors, Ian James and Marian Crausaz who were keen to promote a healthier workplace.
Marian said: “I’m delighted with the success of the ban and how well our staff has coped with either giving up smoking or changing their habits and going outside to smoke. It has undoubtedly created a happier and healthier workplace.”
Praise for Sparkworld has came this year from ASH, Action on Smoking and Health, and from No Smoking Day, which was celebrated on March 8.
A spokesperson for ASH said: "ASH are delighted that Sparkworld have decided to prioritise the health of their staff by banning smoking in the workplace in advance of national legislation. An hour a day in a room with a smoker is nearly 100 times more likely to cause lung cancer in a non-smoker than 20 years spent in a building containing asbestos.
“We would urge all businesses to follow Sparkworld's lead and not wait for national legislation to protect their workers. Second-hand smoke kills. Nobody should have to breathe in another person's smoke to make a living."
Ben Youdan, chief executive of No Smoking Day, said: “This really demonstrates how effective a good smoke-free policy can be. It’s not just about getting rid of the tobacco smoke, it’s also about showing smokers in the workplace that they can get help to give up.
“Sparkworld’s policy is the perfect example of how a such a policy can boost employees health, moral and be a huge success for all concerned”.
Sparkworld offered help to staff to give up smoking, including nicotine patches and hypnotherapy, and many took up the offer.
Gill Botfield (54) who works in the administration department said: “I smoked 20 a day from quite a young age. I tried giving up once before but found it hard to quit for good, but now I have really beaten it. I feel much healthier ands the whole place smells nicer and fresher than before.”
